Martin Stone, now working in Skibbereen, began painting in school and had his first professional commission at 15. For many years he made a living as a mural painter and working as a public artist. His work is characterized by sensitive handling of figurative subject matter with expressionist qualities of colour, viewpoints and painterly qualities; primarily he is an intuitive painter. He brilliantly conjures up the Irish landscape without ever resorting to pastiche.
I value the importance of passion, intuition and spontaneity, which I temper with discipline. I am influenced by a diverse range of artists such as, Edward Hopper, Turner, the Imp-ressionists as well as the American expressionist painters, John Skelton and the Euston Road School of the 1940’s and 1950’s. In a world of racket and clamour my work strives to show the quiet, still moments that speak to us all.
Martin was educated at the Chelsea College of Arts, Masters Degree, and the University of Glamorgan, Post Graduate Masters Diploma 2004.
Martin has exhibited throughout Ireland and in London. His work is held in university and business collections.
